I’m thinking about using an x79 Asus Deluxe board. Even though the specs don’t clearly say it supports Windows 10, there are drivers available, so I’m leaning toward it working. I’m wondering if I can connect to the internet via Windows 10 to fetch the drivers, or if I’ll need to switch to an older OS and install Windows 10 separately. This could seem confusing, but I’m still getting the hang of things.

Windows 8 and 10 come with solid built-in drivers, so you should be able to access the internet without them.

since you don't enable it, the LAN ports won't appear in network settings. for instance, my motherboard required separate drivers—one for Intel LAN and another for ASMedia LAN—because it had dual Ethernet ports.

This doesn't clarify the reason for using generic drivers. Likely a misunderstanding. Good attempt probably is.

It seems you're asking about the purpose of using generic drivers. They are typically employed when specific hardware drivers aren't available or when compatibility is a concern.

Many folks are discussing the use of the CD provided with the motherboard, but I'm not sure why anyone would choose that option.
