That's a good observation.

Looking for Win10 deals outside the official MSRP usually means you're entering the grey market. **Buy with caution.** The same applies to what @Nayr438 mentioned earlier.

The optimal choice is to keep reusing your existing Windows 7 or 8 retail (movable) license by constantly upgrading it. Each upgrade provides you with an OEM license for ten uses on the device, after which the old key can be transferred to another machine. Just keep going and laugh!

You may have a Windows 7 or 8 activation code that works for Windows 10. I recently built my computer and used a Windows 8 upgrade key from Microsoft for $15. That key activated Windows 10 smoothly, and I hadn’t used it before because I switched back to Windows 7 on my old machine. Alternatively, you could try selling the key on eBay and get a refund if it’s counterfeit.

@Ryan_Vickers and @TetraSky shared their thoughts. They mentioned having a few Windows 7 Pro keys from their previous workplace, originally kept just in case they needed to install Windows 7 on a PC. Later, they found these keys worked for activating Windows 10, so now they use them for that purpose. The keys came from old builds that were broken and discarded, and they obtained them for free after asking their boss. They emphasized not taking Windows 7 keys from workplaces without confirming it's acceptable first.
