Upgrading from a GTX 1080 to the 3060 and wondering if there will be a CPU bottleneck with your GPU, some trusted sources suggest you might face issues during gaming. I’m looking for opinions on whether this setup could cause problems. Thank you in advance.
It would depend on the game and the desired performance level, such as 60hz or 144hz. In strategy games, the CPU is often the main limitation no matter which one you use. If I were choosing, I wouldn't upgrade a 3700X, it remains a powerful CPU. What games do you play and what resolution and refresh rate are you using?
I play on 1920x1080, 240hz, often enjoy games like csgo, arma 3, beamng.drive, and I’m considering buying a VR to get into it. For other games I play less, such as fifa or siege, usually just with friends. Regarding VR, would it cause problems or be a bottleneck for services like VRchat or Pavlov VR? Thanks again, and I look forward to your reply.
The issue you need to address is whether the system delivers the performance you expect. Does it satisfy your frame rate and image quality standards (covering resolution)? If yes, then there’s no concern. If not, then understanding your preferred games and requirements will help determine what upgrades are necessary, if any.
I'm fully aware, and I moved from the 1080 to the 3060, though it wasn't a major upgrade. This card has been with me for a long time, and I think it's time to switch to something newer while adding more frames. As I mentioned, I play on 1080p at 240hz, covering a variety of games. My main titles would likely be CSGO, Arma3, and VRChat or VR games, since I'm planning to get into VR soon. Thanks again.
This doesn't clearly outline the performance targets you're aiming for. Even running at 640x480 with low quality at 10 FPS still meets them. If your objectives are higher resolution, medium settings, and at least 30 FPS for 99% of users, we can reach a more accurate conclusion.
I thought you should easily reach 240 FPS in CSGO with a 3700X and 3060 unless you're aiming for a significantly higher refresh rate. Arma 3 is quite demanding on the CPU, so you probably won't hit 240hz there. I expected you to get a high refresh rate in those VR titles, though. Since you already have it, just give the games a try—soon you'll see if the 3700X meets your requirements. My opinion is that the newer Intel and AMD chips are faster, but personally that won't change much for me.
If that's the case, it depends on the game, but
csgo: low settings, 1080p, 100fps works well for me (I already get a lot more so it's quite high)
arma 3: low settings, 1080p, 25-30fps is playable since koth is very intense
vrchat: any settings, 1080p, 60fps is playable and feels good for a vr game
It really depends on the game—CSGO requires smooth frames, while Arma doesn’t care as much because it’s poorly optimized. Many players will be running at 30-40fps.
I don’t need big improvements; I’m just checking if my CPU or GPU might be getting stuck together. I’m managing all these games fine at 1080 with the Ryzen 7 3700X, now I’m switching to a 3060 and the Ryzen 7 3700X. I’m wondering if I might start losing performance.
Yeah, I already have them games and I'm not aiming for huge profits, just concerned about my CPU or GPU getting limited since I upgraded from the 1080 to the 3060. In CSGO I usually get around 300-400fps, in normal competitive matches I'm around 20-40fps, depending on the action, and in ARMA 3 I see high frames too—probably over 140.
