It appears to function solely on Windows 10, likely due to a lack of compatibility with earlier DirectX APIs.

Gears 5 requires Windows 10 OS, but some websites list Windows 7 and 8.1 as compatible. DSOgaming and other sites report 80GB of free hard-disk space is required. Microsoft and The Coalition have revealed the final PC system requirements for Gears 5.
If you preordered Gears 5 or are an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you can download the game starting today. Navigate to the Microsoft Store in your browser, open Gears 5, and select "Install/play." To preload, click the ellipsis next to the button and install it on your console.
Once you’ve preloaded Gears 5, you’ll want to know when you can actually jump in and play it. The time for the standard version hasn’t been revealed yet, but the early access one has. If you are able to play early access with Game Pass, you will be able to start playing at 9pm in your local time zone on Sept. 5. That time of day will likely be the same for the day that the standard version releases. If you’re in the US, that is 9pm ET, wherever you are. So it’d be 6pm PT. In short, you can preload Gears 5 to your account now. The early access version will unlock at 9pm local time on Sept. 5.
I observed that, but a lack of Google results for Gears 5 on Windows 8 raises concerns regarding its validity if unconfirmed. It wouldn't be an isolated instance, and Microsoft simplified the transition to Windows 10. When Windows 10 launched, some titles were initially announced as exclusive to it, subsequently porting to Windows 7 due to fan response. Given we are over four years into Windows 10’s release, a trend toward Windows 10 requirements may become more prevalent. Furthermore, my update to version 1903 has improved system performance significantly, and others have reported similar enhancements in game execution due to the streamlining employed. Therefore, there are justifiable reasons to utilize Windows 10.
Many individuals, including myself, avoided Windows 8. A primary factor was their false claim regarding the return of the traditional Start button, which they subsequently retracted, opting instead to announce the impending launch of Windows 10 and acknowledging the potential for significant improvements within Windows 8. While third-party applications can restore the Start button, this should not be a necessary solution. Windows 8 shares similarities with Vista, a minimally adopted operating system. Furthermore, Windows 10 offers superior gaming capabilities through features such as HDR support and modern API compatibility. Considering its free availability with ongoing updates (excluding phone support), adopting Windows 10 presents a logical choice. Although telemetry concerns exist, it is easily disabled, and tools like SpyBot Anti-Beacon provide further protection against it. My experience with Windows 10 has been seamless.
