Widespread presence of AP applications
Widespread presence of AP applications
Hello everyone, I'm currently enhancing my home network and want to explore Ubiquity products. What’s been unclear so far is which access point to choose? I’m aiming for a Wi-Fi 7 setup to future-proof as much as possible. Since I’m not upgrading anything unless it breaks, I’m considering the 140 and 280 models. The U7 Lite covers about 1300 sq ft, but my house is 1450 sq ft. The U7 Pro XG is the newer version with better range and a tri-band radio. I’m not very familiar with AP terminology and wonder if the price difference really matters. That’s why I’m reaching out to experts for clarification. I plan to install two units upstairs and one downstairs. My home is already wired, and I’ll use the Ubiquity Cloud Gateway with PoE.
I intend to get the special edition Dream Machine for the unmanaged 2 AP PoE Switch 48. I also plan to acquire two additional units for my garage and shed. 24 port face plates included.
Initially, the U7 Lite should cost around $99. For long-term compatibility, would you like 6GHz support? The U7 Lite lacks a 6GHz radio, but it does offer 6GHz capability, 4x4 MU-MIMO on 5GHz (compared to 2x2 on the U7 Lite), and 10GbE. This setup is suited for more crowded client areas. Given varying building designs, I recommend using UniFi Design to visualize requirements and placement. If you plan to add additional PoE+/++ APs later, you'll need more than the two PoE+ ports the UDM-SE provides. Are your APs expected to be the sole PoE devices? Then PoE injectors would be suitable. Also, considering the price of the UDM-SE, a UCG-Ultra/Max combined with a compact UniFi PoE switch could suffice for your PoE needs. Keep in mind that the UCG-Ultra only supports UniFi Network, while Max and UDMs can run other applications like Protect if needed.
I’m interested in getting Wi-Fi 6 too, since my phone already works with it. I’m planning for four APs, so I’ll go for the special edition model because it supports PoE and PoE+. I was thinking about buying a regular model and adding PoE injectors later, but I might end up using PoE cameras eventually. Is the U7 Lite really limited to Wi-Fi 4? That’s what I’m hoping for. I should probably just purchase the better AP and skip the rest.
“Wifi 6” and “6GHz” don’t always match. Wifi 6 works on both 2.4 and 5GHz bands, while 6GHz requires devices supporting that frequency. Both client and access points must have 6GHz capability to use it.
For everyday home use, I’d recommend the simpler version—the W7 Lite. It offers essential features without the extra cost.
Do you own equipment that works at 6 GHz? You didn’t mention your internet performance. Have you checked other brands besides Ubquiti? Avoid being limited to a single manufacturer. I rely on Ubiquiti’s gear, but their switches weren’t ideal for my needs. My primary switch and POE switch are Netgear models. My firewall and router are an OPNsense unit. Everything runs on 10G connections. The key is staying flexible and not forcing everything from one supplier, especially if it doesn’t meet your requirements.
The U7-Lite supports WiFi 5/6/7 devices. It lacks a 6GHz antenna, yet most 5/6/7 features still function with the 2.4GHz and 5GHz antennas. If you have few or no 6GHz capable gadgets now or soon, this model works well for typical home users. Its power draw is lower than Pro/ProMax/ProXG/ProXGS if efficiency matters. If you're curious about the "double-price-one" offer and unsure why, maybe skip it for now. After using two U7-Lites, you'll know whether additional units are needed or if an upgrade is right. We can't provide a precise AP model or number because performance depends on your specific setup—layout, materials, and interference levels differ from ours. If you're considering Ubiquiti equipment, try running UniFi Design to plan optimal placement for better coverage. You can also test coverage with higher-end models to see the impact. The best way to confirm is installing the APs and testing the WiFi yourself.
This device is designed for seamless connection to UniFi’s unified dashboard. It’s optional and not required.
