Why is my pc severly underperforming?
Hey everyone. The issue I'm facing is pretty tough. In any game, I'm consistently getting very low frames. I set up everything the same way—gameplay videos and a 1680x1050 resolution in BF1 on low settings—I still see 50-60 FPS with constant stutters. In Valorant it's over 100 but it feels choppy. All my temperatures and GPU/CPU usage look normal. Any advice would be appreciated.
Specs: Asus Strix RX 480 8GB 8GB RAM, I5 6500 at 3.20GHz, 14GB DDR3 at 1600MHz (previously 8GB but added more because I thought RAM was the problem). PSU 350W +80W, also suspected PSU issue but the PC wouldn't even boot if it were the problem.
the pc will begin when the psi problem arises. it doesn't extract full power during idle, only when under load. if your power source lacks the needed wattage for optimal performance, you'll face restrictions. yes, it might crash occasionally but not consistently. an rx480 needs at least a 450w psu. also, ram—14gb suggests mismatched modules. timing inconsistencies will occur and dual-channel operation is unlikely.
Your computer should function properly with a lower power supply. 350 Watts isn't sufficient. The card might handle up to 300 Watts during high demand. Consider a more powerful power supply, ideally 550 Watts or above.
Intel CPUs typically back up to Flex memory and can handle dual-channel mismatched modules. Clock speeds are determined by the slowest module's latency, which is usually the lowest-speed SPD. This configuration isn't ideal, but it's better than what you expected.
The sticks performed well without causing issues, even improving FPS in certain titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2. I used it with an 8GB configuration before and now have 4,4,4,2. Regarding the PSU upgrade, it might help reduce stutters since my card typically draws about 130W after the MSI afterburner.
If your PC struggles beyond what you expect, even with a Threadripper and RTX 3090, I’d be surprised. In gaming, it’s surprising if it doesn’t push more than your power supply can manage. This setup requires at least a 500W PSU. Seek a Tier C or higher model.
but i mean the games are running, some perform better than others but the consistent fps drops and stutters are really frustrating. i checked the gpu usage, it plummets to near zero, and the wattage also drops significantly. could this be the issue? i’m sure my i5 6500 isn’t a bottleneck for an rx 480, but i’ve asked every forum and gotten no response.
It's being removed because there isn't sufficient power for it.
Today I tried the 600w PSU again, but the issues persisted. FPS remained low and stuttering continued. I've performed a clean install, updated drivers, and checked everything—still no solution.
