Because it provides simpler access to functions such as shift and ctrl.
It's typical, most people are accustomed to it, so altering it would seem unusual.
It's the ideal spot for your hand on a keyboard. It's also near shift, ctrl and tab, which are key functions.
It doesn’t seem as appealing. I think it’s simpler and more user-friendly.
