It’s likely someone shared details about major changes in visual quality over time. Resolution and these improvements aren’t directly linked. Only certain GPUs are significantly affected by PCIe 3.0. You don’t necessarily require 5.0 for 4K gaming. In terms of pixel count, the leap from 1440p to 4K is much larger than from 1080p to 1440p. 1080p sits around 2 million pixels, while 1440p is just under 3.7 million. 4K brings in about 8.3 million pixels. Pixel density also matters based on screen size. If 4K isn’t appealing yet, that’s okay—personal preference counts.
Using that reasoning, why invest in high-end enthusiast components? For 1440p, a 3070 provides more than enough GPU strength. Many people spend a lot on PC upgrades and often have the funds or savings to cover it. Also, 4K adds noticeable value, particularly for larger screens or TVs. Personally, I lack the budget or strong motivation to move to 4K. 1440p was a tough choice initially from a financial standpoint (needing more powerful GPUs).
Not really for 1440p at 120Hz in AAA titles, my 3070 manages about 60 frames with everything boosted in SOTTR and Cyberpunk (with DLSS balanced). I don’t mind because I mainly play competitive games like Valorant on a 240Hz 1440p screen, where my GPU handles that frame rate easily even at max settings.
You can discuss similar points about nearly all PC components in the market. It seems reasonable to suggest they might not have produced a superior GPU compared to the GTX 1070. Some individuals notice the distinction more clearly on bigger screens, such as 43-inch displays, and 4K panels are becoming more affordable. While it remains costly and approaching diminishing returns, for those with the budget and desire for enhanced performance it can be worthwhile. It isn't suitable for everyone, especially beginners, but makes sense for enthusiasts who enjoy customizing hardware or upgrading their monitors. If you prefer not to invest in this path, that's perfectly okay. However, for those who value a better experience—particularly in specific situations—it can be justified. Personally, I opt for 4K gaming because I appreciate larger displays, and while 1440p on a 40-inch or bigger screen is rare and significantly less impressive than 4K, acquiring a capable used GPU for 4K is now quite accessible (e.g., 6900 XTs have been reasonably available around $500, and someone even bought one for $350). If you don’t see value in it, that’s fine, but there’s still a place for it, and its importance will grow as prices drop and technology advances.
On a big screen it can really matter. Playing games on a 24-inch monitor at 4k resolution isn’t very practical for normal viewing distances. Big screens and ultra-wide displays might become more sensible. Another scenario is VR. My Vive Pro operates around 1440p to 4k pixels per frame, which isn’t the top-tier headset available. A device like the Vive Pro 2 or Pimax 8k can easily surpass a UHD/4k display in terms of actual pixels. Having a GPU that can handle those numbers and maintain 90+ frames per second isn’t cheap, but it’s definitely worth the investment for high-end users spending around 1000 dollars on headsets.
