Most people have their favorite game or style, and I'm no exception. I really enjoyed arena shooters. My first FPS on the computer was Unreal Tournament, which my dad played. When I was eight years old, I heard NPCs yelling "DIE BITCH!" and it was super intense—I loved it. I played that game a lot and even had my first LAN session at my dad's house. Later, I tried CTF on Facing Worlds or Lava Giant, and deathmatch on Curse. Since then, I've always had a preference for arena shooters.
Primarily single-player or multiplayer FPS titles. I've always had a fondness for them since the first PC we owned came with DOOM installed. Just like you, I've been influenced by the older generation around me into enjoying these kinds of games.
My first game that really captured my interest was Myst.
I enjoy puzzle games with rich stories.
I also appreciate titles that have a dark or melancholic atmosphere. Games like Darksouls draw me in not because of the challenge or battles, but due to their intense and somber vibe.
If a game has a compelling narrative, many issues can be overlooked.
singleplayer games definitely, my reaction times are never fast enough to go competitive (even tho I'm young).
RPG... older ones yes, new ones not so much. Either they're super grindy and I only go in once in a while to wreck havoc (Serious Sam series is good for that btw), or buried with micro-trans. Currently I play FFXV, Control and Hitman series, completed Tomb Raider series' latest 2 games.
I only play BeamNG.drive among simulators and Minecraft as survival game (not as a creative build game) so these two likely don't count.
I have never been a fan of story bound/story driven games, even games where there is a background story I tend to just skip through dialog and not care about the story.
I have always loved creative sandbox/open world games (stuff like Minecraft, Terraria, Starbound, etc.).
Another genre that I really like is puzzle style games (Overcooked, Unrailed!, Magnum Opus, Factorio, etc.)
I'm impartial to competitive style FPS games like CS:GO or TF2, sometimes I'll have a lot of fun with them and sometimes I just don't. But I love Doom/Doom II, idk what it is about specifically the older doom, the newer one just isn't as fun for me. (Quake III Arena is always fun with friends)
Far Cry 3 was still one of the most fun experience I've ever had in gaming, it was on a s***ty toshiba laptop at like 20 fps but god damn was it fun.
Edit again: If you check my steam you'll see gmod on there, we played it a lot in middle school, it was fun at the time but I haven't really gotten back into it in years.

These are my favorite tower defense and action RPGs, plus some indie micromanging titles such as Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?, Graveyard Keeper, Weapon Shop Fantasy, Dragon Cliff, etc.
Nice! Interesting to see so many different tastes.
I was into the tower defense games for a bit, they can be decent time wasters.
Farcry 3 was great! The only other game we did a LAN with at my dads house. We thought it was so crazy immersive back then, actually being able to hide in bushes from each other and stuff. Puzzle style games I've never really been into, except for Portal. But Portal is kind of the exception, as it's such a brilliant game.
This is why gaming is awesome. Something for everyone. A game could be awful to someone but loved by another.
