What should I do about building a PC now versus waiting until early 2024?
Hello there,
I’m considering purchasing a new PC for my wife, as she’s currently using an older laptop (a Nitro 7 with an NVIDIA 1660 TI). I’m still unsure whether waiting until next year will affect prices or introduce better options. I’m based in Romania, and the costs here seem a bit steep. I’ll be buying from this site: https://www.pcgarage.ro/procesoare.
I’m thinking about getting either an RTX 4070 Gigabyte Windforce OC for around 680 euros, or opting for a lower budget version of the 4060ti with 16GB RAM at about 560 euros. For the CPU, I’m considering either an i7-12700k or an i5-14600k, both priced around 365 euros. I’m not sure which to choose between them, especially since I’ve never used AMD before and have heard concerns about driver issues. I’d prefer something reliable right out of the box, as I’m not comfortable adjusting BIOS settings or drivers later.
Regarding the motherboard, I’m undecided—should I go for DDR5 or DDR4? It’s hard to say without more info. For the power supply, I plan to use a Seasonic Focus GX with 80+ Gold rating and 750W capacity, which seems sufficient. I think it would be fine if I stick to around 1500 euros total, not counting a monitor.
Please let me know your thoughts—I appreciate your time!
Mostly the 14th gen matches the 13th gen, so if available, just choose one. 12700k performs well without any issues. It still offers 8P cores. 13700k provides 8E cores and 14700k has 12E cores. Clock speeds improve slightly each generation. The main factors are choosing between motherboard and RAM based on AMD/Intel decisions. If you can find a B650 (DDR5 only) board for less than a Z690/Z790 DDR4 or DDR5, the value adds up. The AMD 7700X has 8 cores, which is sufficient for gaming—though six might be enough if you plan ahead. Focus GX isn’t ideal but acceptable. Consider AMD graphics cards unless ray-tracing is a priority. RX6800 and RX6800XT offer strong performance at lower costs.
The issue is that each year new or improved options appear and prices drop. The best approach is to discover what games she enjoys playing and build her PC around that! A good CPU, GPU, RAM, power supply, and a solid motherboard are essential. The 14th generation is similar to the 13th in most aspects except for speed and possibly temperature.
Seasonic feels more like a personal choice because I've been using them for about ten years now. There have been no issues, and the price range fits what I need. I don't really focus on NVIDIA features, but I definitely want a GPU that runs smoothly right away. I know AMD offers great prices, but I'm hesitant to commit fully to that brand since I haven't had a system like it before. You're suggesting the i7 12700k is still a solid option for 2023, possibly for another 2 to 3 years? The price jump is noticeable—recent models like the 13700k are around 460 euros, which is about 100 euros more than the 12700k. I was leaning toward an i5 from the latest generation if it matched the performance of the i7 12700k.
We usually play together some FFXIV and Diablo 4, and the laptop she's using seems to have issues with D4. We're interested in trying out new games coming up next year. I believe around 1500 euros would be sufficient, but I'd appreciate some advice on what you might choose. If our site isn't very helpful, we could also use amazon.de since they deliver to Romania too.
Refer to the updated PSU tier list and refine the specific model.
I personally don't rely solely on the tier list; I might need to check Cybenetics for a more accurate rating.
