What is the actual required frame rate, isn't 60 sufficient?
What is the actual required frame rate, isn't 60 sufficient?
It struck me recently (or perhaps it happened before, but I just kept going) that my quest for a more powerful GPU is becoming increasingly urgent. Do I truly need something capable of delivering around 120 fps at 1920p? That’s the resolution I use for my games. There’s no clear need to upgrade beyond a 27-inch screen in Full HD.
I’m accustomed to playing at 25 fps, and the TV maintains a smooth frame rate for the human eye. Aiming for 50 fps would be ideal for buttery smoothness. At the moment, a RX 6500 seems sufficient to achieve that—especially with current games, moderate settings for several more years, and I doubt ray tracing will be worth it.
I also prefer quiet, energy-efficient systems. A 65W 5600G paired with a dedicated ~70W GPU should meet my needs, providing stable 50 fps performance for the foreseeable future.
if the 50fps are smooth for you, nothing is against it
but frame rate and lowest fps during gaming also matter for GPUs. It might cause stuttering if it can't maintain 50fps consistently, though it's a personal preference.
cinema at 25fps and gaming at 25fps can feel quite different
this might help clarify things, but ultimately it's your own opinion. If 50 is acceptable, then it's okay.
others wouldn't even think about "just" gaming at 120 or 200fps.
frames per second (FPS) in TV, cinema, and gaming
frame rate decides if movies, videos, or games run smoothly. Discover the ideal minimum FPS for gaming and how many frames per second are best.
The article covered some useful insights, such as the difference between FPS and game type, which I was already familiar with. It seems the layout is clear and well-organized. Having a GPU that runs at 50 FPS without stutter should suffice for someone like me. I believe it's feasible to restrict FPS in card settings to manage power consumption, and this feature is available for AMD cards as well.
Others can be quite sensitive to lower frame rates. For me, low frame rates lead to motion sickness. I’m not affected by movies, but I’d like to experience strong motion while playing anything below 40 frames. The screen refresh rate and hertz also contribute to this. If you don’t have any problems playing at 30 frames and it looks satisfactory, that’s fine.
