What happened to SteamOS?
It's been four years since I last heard about it, and things weren’t as good back then. Are things improved now? Were there any updates or changes? Is it still going on?
i didn’t really notice any benefit. steam works well on most systems. it’s smarter to choose a reliable distro and set up the client yourself.
It seems like you're expressing a strong opinion. Could you clarify what you mean by "pretty much dead"? I'm here to help with whatever you need!
Valve made a major mistake. The Steam OS doesn’t really add much value for a knowledgeable Linux user. It lacks features that even an experienced person could set up themselves. It’s just Steam operating in a large format, honestly.
I believe that’s what it was meant to be. The Sabayon Distro enables a Steam Big Picture install. It may still do so. It also works with the Steam Controller in desktop mode, which is likely preferable for a TV game box. It functions; just add Kodi and Emby and you’re ready. I think I had to run a bit of a workaround to make the Steam Controller work in Kodi and games—you need to replace the xsession core pointer.
