It was largely wasteful. No one wants to set up a PC solely for Steam in a big picture setting, with a GNU/Linux OS that prevents many games from running properly. Honestly, you get a superior experience on Windows.

Steam OS served as a last resort alternative when Microsoft focused solely on universal applications and its store. Since Microsoft hasn't taken such steps yet, Steam OS remains less important.

I followed that process myself. I adjusted GDM and the xprofiles so they could connect with the steam controller, allowing login from Steam to Kodi. It functioned well back then, but it’s been a while now. I’ve started to prefer Emby + Android over Kodi + Linux more. The steam controller is really great for HTPC setups.
