Elementary runs on the same kernel as Ubuntu 16.04. You can add Pantheon Desktop manually to Ubuntu, and there are guides available online. You might also switch to GNOME Desktop and install extensions to match the top bar style of Elementary. The main reason I use Elementary is because it lets me resolve most problems on my own, I prefer installing via terminal rather than download centers, and it offers a minimal Debian-like experience. Some users may face issues since not all Ubuntu drivers are present in ElementaryOS, but you can add missing repositories through the terminal and install them that way.
