My current idle temperatures for my CPU are between 38-40°C, and for my GPU they're around 48-50°C. Are these acceptable levels or do they feel a bit too high?

Ignore idle temperatures
Check healthy CPU temps under 55°C for AMD and below 70°C for Intel during testing
Determine GPU load with full temperature readings when stress is applied
All max temps vary by your specific hardware
Refer to temperature info in hwmonitor: www.cpuid.com
Make sure to test it

We should focus on the relevant parts, not the details. As henydiah mentioned, idle isn't the main issue—it's the stress levels that count.
I had a CPU running at 45°C (relatively high) but only reached 52°C under stress, so it didn't really matter. A lower idle of 15°C would be ideal, but if stress hit 70°C we run into problems.
Tell us about the components you have and we can give a more accurate response.

If you have a 15C idle temp in an air cooled system either:
It is winter time and your system is in an unheated room or
You have a malfunctioning thermal sensor.
Idle temps in an air cooled system (or most liquid cooled systems) will never be lower than ambient air temperature.
And 70C is at the upper range of acceptable for load temps in a Core2 system.
Like acer said, your components will make a big difference. This means everything:
motherboard, CPU, GPU, case, fans, construction choices including cable routing, room temperature.

Yeah, I didn’t really mean to use 15C as an example. I actually checked my computer to see all six cores running at 15C and the CPU at 21C during what felt like the worst winter in years—still a bit crazy!

My i7-920 (with a clock speed of 3.82 GHz) stays idle at 26°C during winter. The Dell unit in an unheated space remained idle at 4°C when I began the update process.

My AMD x6 1090T at 4.0GHz is currently idle at 28C on air.
This is interesting because the chip is running 10C cooler than my previous X3 model, which had fewer cores and was only ever clocked to 3.6GHz.

I recently experienced an Athlon X4 640 idling at 13C, likely due to high stress levels. After switching to a Phenom X4 955, it now idles between 30-34C and reaches a peak of around 51C during stress. I noticed a significant difference. Are you suggesting my Athlon might not be reading correctly, or is it actually running much cooler?

Anything running at 13C indicates the room temperature would be at least 10°C - extremely cold. Is this referring to CPU or core temperature?

I recently had an Athlon X4 640 idling at 13C, likely around the 20s when under stress. Then I installed a Phenom X4 955 and it idles between 30-34C during idle and peaks near 51C during stress. I noticed a big difference. Are you suggesting my Athlon wouldn't be handling that heat properly? Or do you think they can run cooler? I'm sorry, but what temperature range should I aim for with my 955 to stay cool?
