I often attach items such as melee and grenades to the mouse thumb buttons. On the battlefield, I assign gadget 1 and 2 to move the mouse left and right. Games with special abilities I also link to the mouse. For example, deus ex uses two thumb buttons plus scrolling.
Occasionally I recall switching from GTAV to Far Cry 3 or 4 and finding the duck behind cover matched the throw grenade button. It was really annoying to sneak up on an outpost, hide behind a tree, and then have to toss a grenade at my feet.
It varies by game. I've picked up FPS mechanics from BF2 and later COD4. That's why I usually fine-tune the FPS settings—like C for voice chat, V for navigation, 3 for the main weapon, and tying melee to the mouse thumb button (a trick my brother taught me). For games, I stick closer to the defaults but adjust them a bit more when playing longer. For example, in Rocket League I tend to tweak things further.
