Water Cooling Issue
Water Cooling Issue
Hi
I understand you're asking about the maintenance of open loop water cooling systems and whether the EK-Tube ZMT tube is a zero-maintenance option. It seems you're concerned about the longevity of your current CoolerMaster ML240L cooler, especially since closed loop systems typically last 2 to 3 years. You're considering switching to an EK Liquid 240 and want guidance on identifying the right version from the package box. Also, you're worried about potential leaks if the coolant or tubes aren't changed regularly. Please help me with your questions.
You're content with what you have. They only require opening or maintenance if needed, aside from clearing the radiator's grills. It's also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the watercooling sticky for a clearer understanding of custom watercooling.
rubix-1011 put up a pretty decent water cooling guide sticky at the top of this forum yeah, some folks feel the system should be cleaned every 9-12 months, suspect they're the hard core OCers running 5.9 others feel every 2-3 years Never heard of any changing the tubes, basically they run a cleaning solution they buy or mix themselves (80% distilled water/20% white vinegar) - just watch your temps - if they climb over time (ie 1-2 years, learn how to drain your system and refill with a cleaning solution to run in it for a bit
My sticky has been sitting for a while and likely needs some refreshing, but the main ideas still hold. I've used it for about two to three years with good coolant or anti-microbial treatment. If you don't notice any issues, it's likely everything is fine—just trust your eyes. Either way, if you decide to replace the tubing or coolant, expect a cost of around $40 to $50 for new supplies, which is quite reasonable. If you drain the coolant, make sure the removed tubing remains as secure as possible when you reattach it to the fittings. Over time, the tubing can change shape and might not fit as tightly the next time.

You're okay with what you have. They just need to be cleaned out occasionally, not maintained beyond that. You should also familiarize yourself with the watercooling sticky for a clearer understanding of custom watercooling.
Actually, my main concern is getting started and having fun.
I try to suppress the itching and keep it in check. I believe closed loops are more reliable against leaks. When my ML240L got damaged, I replaced it with a Corsair at that time.
Closed loop coolers seem unlikely to leak since they don’t require exposure to building materials or coolant filling, which aligns with their design. Custom watercooling provides more expansion and personalization not usually found in standard AIOs, but your outcome relies on the quality of your loop build and correct fitting/tubing seals. Liquid cooling—no matter its form—carries inherent risks tied to using liquid inside a PC. I’ve observed photos of leaking AIOs and heard about people using low-quality custom loop products without success. There are also cases where coolant leaks occur with high-end parts, though this is often due to user mistakes rather than manufacturing flaws. AIO leaks were more frequent when these components first appeared, but significant improvements have been made over the years. Additionally, most AIOs come from the same 2-3 manufacturers, so branding, fans, and software mainly vary by packaging.

Liquid cooling introduces some risk due to liquid inside the PC, as seen in leaking AIOs and some custom loop products. Coolant leaks with high-end parts are rare today because of better testing, though user error still plays a role. AIO leaks were more common 10 years ago when these components first appeared, but they’ve improved significantly since then. Most AIOs come from the same manufacturers, so branding and accessories vary only by model.
