In short, I've been struggling with Windows 10 for about a year now. There are countless steps you must take to reduce the overwhelming trash and surveillance features built into the system. I think if you set it up like Windows 7—turning off all the unnecessary trash options—it could seriously affect how the OS communicates with Microsoft. Blocking so much data is ridiculous, and it’s only a fraction of what needs to be done. Reformatting the PC and installing Windows 10 takes hours of tweaking, disabling services, cleaning up the task scheduler, and adjusting registry settings. It feels like a nightmare, especially when you realize that even after all this work, the OS still behaves strangely.

Nowadays, I’m used to Windows 10’s dark theme, but it’s not ideal for me. The high-contrast options are terrible, making it hard to see properly. Switching back to Windows 7 would be really frustrating because its themes are worse. On the other hand, Windows 10 runs fine after a rough treatment, but it’s still not my favorite.

Gaming performance is another issue. I noticed frame rates are similar on both, but pushing settings up on Windows 10 causes my screen to flicker badly—something I didn’t see on Windows 7. My hardware is old enough that even a fresh Windows 10 install was problematic before, with issues like VR not working and picture errors. But now it’s stable on 10. Still, I’m tired of being tracked and constantly having to reset my settings.

My main frustration is gaming and multimedia. I read about Linux and saw some positive updates, especially for gaming. I’m thinking about giving Steam a try with SteamPlay, but I’m not sure if any games will run well on Linux. My only solid game right now is Dead by Daylight. I’m also worried about the update system—Windows Update keeps coming back even after I try to disable it.

I really want to move away from Windows, but I need some programs and games that I can’t live without. I’m open to suggestions like Ubuntu or Mint, but I just want a smooth transition. Right now, I’m stuck between missing out on updates and dealing with the hassle of Windows 10.

Consider installing Windows 7 alongside another operating system. Xubuntu is a good option for dual booting.

AMIPS could function within Wine, which is a plus... https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p...;iId=32944

I’d really stick with 7 right now. The other way would just make things worse for my eyes after all the time I’ve spent with Windows 10’s dark themes. A high contrast theme is what keeps me from going back. It’s a bit picky, but I’ve changed settings many times before and don’t want to risk it again.

I was looking forward to it too, especially if you haven't used one before—I'd definitely suggest it.

This reminds me of thinfoil hat ideas. Everything you do online seems like it’s exposing your privacy. The internet wasn’t built with security in mind at all. Still, I think companies really need to ease up on collecting so much data. It feels like they’re pushing us toward a dystopian future where surveillance is the norm—like a bad sci-fi film. My take is that you can’t avoid it anymore. It’s almost pointless to try to stay hidden.

Absolutely, Linux is essential. Using Ubuntu or Linux Mint will make a big difference.

Get Tails on Linux. No one could mine you on that system.

Is it linked to Tor? I probably don’t like the web, but Tor? No way.

Dead by daylight isn't functioning properly due to Wine EAC not being supported. It's unclear if they'll ever be fixed. Performance varies based on hardware; GPUs with Vulkan support work well for most DX11 games. The CPU might be a concern, as DXVK could impact it noticeably. Overall performance is decent but not matching native Linux or Windows games. For beginners, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or KDE Neon seem suitable. I've already posted a thread about gaming on Linux.
