You're dealing with a 24/7 Ubuntu desktop 20.04 LTS setup on an older machine (Xeon 3450, 16GB RAM, 2x 500GB drives). It's great you're exploring turning it into a NAS server! I can help guide you through the process step by step. Let's get started!

Find guides on configuring Samba or NFS servers using search terms. Look for official documentation, tutorials, and community resources on Google.

Linux offers flexibility, letting you customize nearly any setup with various distributions. The main distinction between desktop and server versions mainly lies in the included software. For a NAS compatible with both Windows and Linux, SAMBA/SMB is recommended for sharing. https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-configure...ossa-linux

Here’s a clearer version of your message:

Hi there! I tried to set up this configuration, but I’m still having some issues. I think I might have made a mistake. Could you help me figure it out?

I got stuck at step 4. I don’t have permission to modify smb.conf since I’m not the owner, so I can’t save it. Got any suggestions?

I believe Ubuntu comes with Gedit installed by default? You must launch it with root access, then run sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf
