I want to switch to buying games legally. I created a Steam account and tried out some free titles to understand the service. I downloaded TF2 but my internet speed is slow (512kbps), so I can't finish the whole download at once. When I turned off my computer, all progress disappeared. I moved Dota 2 to my library and downloaded it via torrent, then copied the files into the 'common' folder. Steam didn't recognize them, even after copying to the downloading/570 folder. There seems to be an issue linking torrent files to Steam purchases. Can I find a way to connect torrent downloads directly to games I buy on Steam?

You stopped it abruptly, but it stays active when you enable sleep mode with Steam open—it keeps pausing until the internet reconnects.

It seems you're experiencing an issue where your download progress isn't saved when you close Steam or turn off your computer. This might indicate a problem with your Steam setup.

I disabled my PC while still using Steam, could this be the cause?

Why are you turning things off so often? Just shut it down when you're away for a while, restart after updates or programs, or when you want a quick refresh—usually weekly or every other week.

I believe sleeping will help preserve my download progress, so I’ll give it a try. The original question remains unchanged.

There isn't a straightforward method to download game files via torrent and connect them to Steam purchases. Finding the right torrent can be difficult, and even if you locate one, Steam may not support it.
