2GB of memory works for many Linux distributions, though the 900MHz processor is quite slow. It should handle AntiX without major issues, even if it isn't the most user-friendly option. Lubuntu could be a good choice since it supports 2GB RAM. Xubuntu probably won't run well on that CPU speed. Note: The EeePC 900A has an Intel Atom N270 at 1.6GHz. My Compaq Mini 110c shares the same CPU and memory, and it runs Xubuntu smoothly, but Lubuntu is still recommended.

It depends on what you need. I’d pick either Windows 10 or Ubuntu. Minecraft fans usually love Minecraft, so that’s a fun option! (I guess I’m a bit old for it.)

Existing setup already has the software. Adding a new one will be very difficult. It’s simpler to adjust or fine-tune what you have now.

The most recent instance of extra costs for a Windows license occurred several years ago, typically around 2018 or earlier, depending on regional pricing changes.

Ubuntu works on Asus Eee, but make sure you check compatibility. It might not be the best setup for your needs.

They can modify a custom-built system or install Windows 10 on an older PC that still supports Windows XP.

That's a rare case. Still, the $100 fee is a very little price to pay if the alternative is Ubuntu...
