It didn't locate anything on the second attempt. I'll try using TestDisk next.

To run testdisk, open a terminal and use the command `testdisk`. This will check your disk for errors and report any issues.

I believe I located the executable file—disappointing it doesn't launch automatically.

It seems the program is hard to use, they missed adding a user interface. A GUI would make it much easier to navigate.

Which file to run? It looks like you're unsure—should you use testdisk_win or another option?

The program didn’t function as expected. Could you clarify which partition it was referring to and how to save the detected data? The interface asked about writing to a specific folder, but it didn’t respond properly. The system said changes would apply after reboot, yet nothing happened.

I haven't used it recently, so I don't recall. Their wiki provides excellent details.

I arrived late to retrieve the information but decided to log this for others, especially if they format a whole disk with encryption. I managed to bring back the Truecrypt volume, though I’m still unsure how. Initially, I thought giving up was wise since there was no sure method. I started experimenting with various tools, hoping something random would help.

I used Recuva first—it’s known for deleted files but couldn’t salvage the Truecrypt container. I scanned it and found a 1.66GB file (named EÒ%Ol•‚÷), but it seemed useless. I moved it to another drive and tried again, but nothing changed. Eventually, I opened Recuva’s advanced settings, scanned the drive, and spotted the file—though it looked like a standalone part of the container. I decided not to touch it further.

Next, I tried TestDisk. It didn’t guide me well at first, but I followed the instructions carefully, scanning the drive without writing anything. The wiki page might have useful tips.

On another attempt, I ran the program and clicked “recover” on the drive. The interface asked where to find the file, so I chose a different drive. On the next screen, it listed partition tables. I focused on the “Intel” one because that was mentioned. I didn’t find much else useful.

Then, I tried “analyse” and did some actions. I’m not sure what I was doing, but it didn’t seem to help much.

I also downloaded the GUI version (2.10.0), which was confusing and frustrating. I thought it might be the one that actually recovered my volume, but I couldn’t confirm.

I ended up working on a computer that would crash unexpectedly and slow down. When I finally mounted the drive, it was unreadable, but after formatting it, I managed to recover all my files. Unfortunately, the original drive was left empty.

This was my first experience with such a situation, and I had to try different approaches without much success. In the future, I’d test another USB drive with a pre-installed Truecrypt container to see if it worked. If I could, I’d update this post with the results.

This discussion has attracted more than 1000 views. Could this assist someone in restoring a previously lost formatted volume? Your thoughts would be appreciated.
