I tried it once more a year later. It turns out the process is surprisingly straightforward after all the work I put in beforehand. 1) Pick the device in truecrypt without mounting it yet. 2) Click Tools at the top, then choose Restore Volume Header. 3) Follow the on-screen steps. 4) Mount the full disk encrypted drive next. 5) It will prompt you to format it. 6) Use Recuva to try and recover everything. If the formatting doesn’t work, it’s likely the TC volume isn’t recoverable—data might have been overwritten.
