By default, source games run with three threads if multi-threading is turned on. You can adjust this setting yourself. From what I've noticed, the games actually benefit from these additional threads, which helps me achieve higher FPS on my laptop when I set it to four instead of three. (Six images shown here showing the settings I used before the system failed)
