Urgent request for a motherboard replacement. Please prioritize.
Hi all, Cutting a long story short but my pc fell 2 years ago and i believe it broke the motherboard - only turns on for 3 secs then off (looking to actually do something about it and fix it now). I'm looking to buy a MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard from amazon to test my parts (cpu, gpu etc) to see if they work. If they work i'll keep the mobo but if not i want to return the motherboard. Do you think i can return the mobo if i test my parts on it? Pls help thnx
I understand your perspective. This option isn't suitable for your current goal.
Generally no. You could purchase locally (Micro Centre or Fry's) since exchanges are simpler when you're nearby.
Sadly, in the UK there aren't stores like that—really frustrating... do you think it's a good idea to take this chance?
Yes, just don't scratch or damage the board in any way, and return it in the exact same condition it came to you in. Use the exact same shipping box and packing material. Your CPU is almost a sure bet to be fine, your RAM is probably fine unless the board cracked underneath it. The GPU may or may not be fully up and running, and any mechanical hard drives you have could be worse for the wear. Haven you checked all of your connections in your old PC? If a PSU cable was knocked loose, a stick of RAM was jolted out, something like that, your system probably still works fine. The first thing to be before buying anything, imo, is to take it apart and breadboard it on an open table so you can inspect all the components and see them run (or not) before deciding on what you need. I'd bet you something was knocked loose and would work fine if tested now.
Thanks for the guidance – it really means a lot! From what I remember, I pushed all the wires in place. When the issue occurred, I brought my rig to a tech support person. Usually, when trying to turn it on, it wouldn’t boot, but once I gave it a little flex, it would start (though the GPU fans didn’t activate). There was no display output either. Maybe instead of rushing to buy a new motherboard, I’ll try recording the process and sharing the results here. Fingers crossed it helps everyone during this time!
