Upgraded to Gigabit Internet, but full speeds aren't working anymore.
I'm struggling to achieve the full internet speed on my main PC. We upgraded from 500 Mbps to gigabit last month for just a $10 extra monthly fee, which seemed obvious. Once I began running speed tests to verify everything was functioning properly, I noticed my desktop struggled to reach maximum performance. After several restarts and testing the same Ethernet port on my laptop, it became clear that my internal Ethernet ports were the issue. I shared this on Reddit and searched online, looking for driver updates or reverting changes. I even tried connecting my PC to a different port to determine if the problem was with the PC itself. Previously, it worked flawlessly at 500 Mbps or 500 Mbps with gigabit. Now, it drops to about 800 Mbps, but only up to around 200 Mbps even when connected to the 2.5Gb port. After reading a Reddit thread and doing more searches, I'm still unsure about the best course of action. Any advice would be appreciated. Additional details: Ryzen 9 3900X, MSI Mag Tomahawk B550, equipped with gigabit and 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, 32 GB RAM, RTX 2070 Super. Ethernet linked to gigabit port. ISP: Frontier Fios, previously offered 500/500 Mbps speeds. Recent tests show roughly 800/200 Mbps. Driver Info: 10.48.315.2021, March 2021.
Can your modem support those speeds? Routers usually work with 1Gbps, but you should verify that too.
Is this an ISP-provided router? If yes, consider upgrading if your previous router was from the ISP. Choose a model supporting 1Gbit speeds. If you already have such a router, it should work.
I neglected to mention that my laptop maintains a perfect 920/920 performance on every other Ethernet connection in the house. It functions properly.
Everyone should relax regarding the Quantum router from FiOS. I've been a Gigabit customer since its launch and have consistently used the Quantum gateway. It performs flawlessly, delivering full 1000Mb speeds both ways. @tyboxer13 your device is working perfectly.
