The cooler is limiting CPU performance when under stress. A fresh thermal paste might help, or it could be another issue.

the model shows "95W" thermal design power for both units. the 9900k runs hotter than the 8350k. increased frequency adds extra warmth.

Also: Using standard thermal paste (medium to high-end like NT-H1, MX-4, Kryonaut, NT-H2) can significantly lower temperatures, especially if the laptop hasn’t been refurbished. Cleaning the fans, heatsink, and replacing thermal pads when needed should help reduce temps and enable higher boost speeds. Based on budget, an i7-4710MQ or i7-4700MQ (not HQ, MQ!) can boost performance by 30-40%. They’re around $60 to $70 on eBay. A i7-4800MQ or 4810MQ offers 45-50% improvement for $45-50, while a 4900MQ gives about 60% gain for $130. A new i5 with i5-8300H/8259U would be roughly 80% faster, and an i5 with i5-8250/8350U could improve by 50%.

Awesome! Your notes are really helpful—I cleaned everything up and the fan was quite bothersome. Since it hasn’t been repasted, I’m thinking about getting an IC diamond. I haven’t looked into thermal pads yet. Based on what you shared, i7-4710MQ or i7-4810MQ might catch my eye, but where can I find them under $100? I only see prices above $120. I’ve been thinking about replacing it with a new laptop, but I’d rather build one myself by spending around 200€ each month on parts. That means a gradual upgrade path. I’m planning to upgrade this laptop with a budget of 400 to 500€ (I’m in Switzerland).

In the US it's significantly more affordable. Once you have something like an i7-4710MQ, there aren't many improvements left. There are no newer CPUs available, and RAM is still limited. For around 500 euros, you can find a laptop that performs better than the i7-4710MQ. Check this link: https://www.dell.com/de-ch/shop/notebook...igurations. The i5-8265U offers double the performance of your i5-4200M and is also superior to the 4710MQ. You'll also receive a new warranty, a fresh screen, an upgraded HDD, and possibly a better GPU.
