Could it be worthwhile? I’m considering moving to a newer Haswell i5 with the same TDP or switching to an i7. I’m wondering if the cooling system would handle it. Plus, I plan to upgrade things like an SSD, battery, and possibly more RAM—since it makes sense both financially and for building a custom PC instead of buying a new laptop.

Your chip fits a Socket G3 PGA and not a BGA. Improving cooling is always possible. Using liquid metal will keep temperatures low, and a cooling pad can help during high load.

CPU-Z indicates it's a 947 rPGA. That term is just technical jargon—don’t worry about the details. I’m also a bit concerned about working with liquid metal, but I’ll stick to a good quality paste.

This one isn't soldered, so I'm open to giving it a shot.

There really are socketed laptops, that's correct. I had the same belief for a while.

An i7-4702MQ is checked here. These models typically sell for $70 to $100 used or refurbished.
