Upgrade to 5080
Upgrade to 5080
Hi,
Checking the purchase of a 5080 while BF is on, I currently have a ROG GeForce 3080. I’m curious if my setup can handle it or if an upgrade would be necessary for better performance. Thanks!
Welcome to the forums, newcomer! Could you share the make, model, and age of your PSU? Has it been used to power the RTX 3080 during its time in your system? I'm curious if your current setup can handle it or if an update would be necessary for better performance. Also, why are you considering a GPU upgrade? The term 'performance upgrade' is quite vague.
Hi - thank you! Sorry, I didn't include that in the build. The PSU is almost six years old now.

Would the performance from the GPU, given my older components, affect the 5080?
There wouldn't be significant delays, and your build remains fully compatible with PCIe across all generations. The 12700f should still serve you for several more years, and you possess a substantial amount of RAM. Naturally, there will be some performance limits due to the less powerful CPU, but you'll notice a clear improvement when switching from a 3080 to a 5080. The main worry is the cost of the 5080 and whether it's a worthwhile investment. Would you like to exchange your 3080 for in-store credit? If so, upgrading to boost performance with the 5080 would mean considering options like a 12900k, 13900k, or transitioning to an AM5 setup with a 7800X3D/9800X3d. With that choice, you'd need to purchase new RAM, a new motherboard, and a CPU—plus deal with the challenges of disassembly and cooler compatibility.
You're wondering about the potential impact of upgrading to the 13900k CPU. It's a good question! Whether it offers a noticeable improvement depends on your specific needs and usage. Consider what tasks you'll be doing most often and how much performance boost you require.
Realistically, the decision hinges on your expectations for gaming. For top performance, a CPU upgrade might be necessary. If you prioritize high graphics settings or resolution and frame rate isn't crucial, a video card would likely be more suitable.
Thank you both for your feedback. Increasing FPS is something I’m interested in. I usually play games at higher graphics settings and stream on Twitch while they run in the background. If I wait for the new CPUs from AMD, it would mean upgrading the motherboard, GPU, cooler, etc.—essentially a full rebuild? Do the AMD chips perform better than Intel?
AMD would represent a completely different setup compared to Intel, requiring a new CPU, motherboard, etc. The 12700k remains a solid choice. Regarding the 3080 series, I believe they are available on eBay for $300-350 since people are looking to buy them as refurbished options to upgrade their systems, which would still provide good value.
Kind of, if you wait for new AMD CPUs and decide to upgrade to them, you'll need a new MOBO, RAM, CPU, but you won't have to get a new CPU cooler(most of the time). You can usually, for free, order a mounting kit from your CPU Cooler's maker that will fit your cooler to the new MOBO. You won't need a new GPU, since you'll have your 5080(unless you're talking about upgrading all at once). You can keep your PSU, case, fans, et cetera. TLDR: New CPU, MOBO, RAM, mounting kit for cooler.
Right now, AMD is by far way better that Intel in performance, and likely still will if you plan to upgrade when future AMD CPUs come out.
