You can still use your Windows 8 key, but you’ll need to obtain a Windows 10 key. Follow the instructions at the provided link for activation steps. After upgrading, ensure Windows 10 is activated before performing a clean install. The CD key will be linked to your Microsoft account. If prompted during installation, choose the skip option to avoid entering your key twice. Once installed and signed in, Windows 10 will activate automatically. If you’re concerned about activation issues, you can retrieve your key after the first upgrade and re-enter it during the clean install. Remember, you must activate Windows 10 before wiping your device.

I just changed my laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 using UEFI. If you have that setup, you won’t need to activate manually—Windows will handle it automatically.

I hope you keep the product key handy just in case you replace your motherboard and need to perform a fresh setup.

Everyone uses the same basic Windows key for their version. We don’t know if Microsoft plans to let people transfer licenses between devices. Your old Windows 7/8.1 license should still work on a fresh Windows 7 or 8.1 setup, even though it’s gone. The key you have might match one of these generic codes: Windows 10 Home - YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7, Windows 10 Home SL - BT79Q-G7N6G-PGBYW-4YWX6-6F4BT, Windows 10 Pro - VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T, and Windows 10 Pro VL-MAK - QJNXR-7D97Q-K7WH4-RYWQ8-6MT6Y.
