Upgrade from Intel Core i7 6700 to i7 8700
Upgrade from Intel Core i7 6700 to i7 8700
From a financial perspective, the decision hinged on whether the upgrade was tailored or flexible. It ultimately came down to selecting the latest compatible platform while keeping costs similar.
This seems like a tricky situation. Since you're not familiar with motherboards yet, you followed advice from a tech shop representative who said your 6th gen processor would fit an 8th gen socket. You built the system yesterday and noticed no display output. It’s possible the issue isn’t a hardware failure but rather a software or configuration problem. Double-check your BIOS settings, ensure the correct chipset is selected, and verify that the CPU is properly seated. If it still doesn’t work, there might be a display or power connection issue.
There exist two forms of LGA 1151... LGA 1151 V1: 6th & 7th generation LGA 1151 V2: 8th & 9th generation
I was told to upgrade my 6th generation CPU to an 8th generation motherboard because they shared the same socket. After doing it, nothing appears during startup. I’m worried about possible damage. I’m considering a used 8700 chipset instead, which is significantly cheaper than a 9700K or similar.
6th and 7th generation Intel CPUs use 100 series and 200 series chipsets. 8th and 9th generation CPUs require 300 series chipsets. The pin count remains consistent, though the arrangement is slightly different. Regardless, your 6700 won't fit on a 300 series board.
