I was told to upgrade my 6th generation CPU to an 8th generation motherboard because they shared the same socket. After doing it, nothing appears during startup. I’m worried about possible damage. I’m considering a used 8700 chipset instead, which is significantly cheaper than a 9700K or similar.

6th and 7th generation Intel CPUs use 100 series and 200 series chipsets. 8th and 9th generation CPUs require 300 series chipsets. The pin count remains consistent, though the arrangement is slightly different. Regardless, your 6700 won't fit on a 300 series board.
