Hi everyone, I own an MSI GT60 2QD 4K Dominator that’s been reliable for five years. I’m considering an upgrade since it’s still working well. I’m wondering if it’s easy enough to replace the CPU and GPU without soldering—just swap in a similar model with the same socket and power rating as my current i7-4710MQ.

The 4910M runs much hotter and requires additional power. tDP doesn't provide useful information. Review the MSI support manual to find compatible options and instructions.

Laptops cannot be modified this way; they are permanently integrated into the device, making it impossible to replace or upgrade components like processors.

The laptop features a socket, making it upgradable. The letter M indicates this possibility.

Previously, laptops came with connectors until the Haswell era. After that, Intel ceased manufacturing socketed laptop SKEWs

It would have been great if they kept doing that.

Yep - but Intel just dropped it and folks didn't respond strongly enough. Now we're stuck with soldered BGA CPUs. Back then, you could purchase a laptop featuring a dual-core i5 4200M or i5 3320M and later upgrade to a quad-core i7 4700MQ or 3630QM when required. We also enjoyed broader availability of MXM GPUs - many premium laptops with 800/900 series Nvidia cards utilized the standard MXM design and supported upgrades. You could opt for a model with a 970M or 870M and then upgrade to a 980M/880M if desired. Of course, it was costly, but alternatives existed. Before that, some OEMs such as Lenovo offered ultrabay models like the Y510p, equipped with a 755M GPU and a slot that accepted an additional 2.5" drive, a DVD writer, or another 755M GPU for SLI configurations.
