He’s trying to upgrade his CPU and found a compatible Intel 9th gen chip, but his current motherboard doesn’t support it because it lacks the necessary BIOS. He’s considering the Gigabyte H310M-A as a possible replacement. I’m trying to figure out what features to look for in new motherboards to ensure everything works together smoothly. To the best of my understanding, the new motherboard is unlikely to create compatibility issues beyond the CPU. I own a 9th generation processor and an MSI Z390-A PRO, which I’m really satisfied with. It appears to boost the CPU slightly by default, and so far I’ve only had positive feedback, aside from the limitation to 9th generation chips.
He received a K variant that can be overclocked. For optimal performance, I suggest using a Z390 motherboard.
Could returning the CPU make Ryzen a more affordable choice despite needing to replace motherboards?
If he isn’t focused on boosting performance, then why did he purchase a K processor? You invested extra to get an overclocking chip and now you’re looking for a non-overclocking board since he prefers that approach. If possible, I’d trade in the CPU for a regular one and redirect those funds toward another component.
It would be more advantageous to return the CPU and wait for a 4th generation Ryzen and B550 motherboard. If he urgently needs it now, consider getting a Ryzen 5 3600 on a B450 instead.
