Mobo: B450 Tomahawk (non max) GPU: Gigabyte 3070ti CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D (though currently Ryzen 5 2600X, this post will focus on upgrading it) Memory: 16GB DDR4 Hi all, I've been looking a bit but haven't found the exact answer I need. I haven't updated my BIOS yet and want to verify I have the correct version, ensuring compatibility. From what I've seen, my MOBO should work but I need a newer BIOS. It looks like "7C02v1H7(Beta version)" is the latest, though it doesn't mention support for the 5800X3D [found here]. I recently got a new cooler and X3D yesterday and am eager to upgrade my CPU for the first time, but I'm keen to do it right. I've read and watched plenty of general tips and will be applying them, but I'm curious if anyone else has tried this setup with a BIOS update or knows if the newest version supports it. Thanks ahead, and thanks for reading.

If it doesn't appear on the list, the board won't accept it. Support needs to be installed in the BIOS for functionality, while the site lists other Ryzen 5 models but not the specific chip you mention. It must match exactly what was shown, not just any variant. Make sure to verify the board's support for your chip before purchasing. Unfortunately, with the current setup, this particular chip won't work even with the latest BIOS. You'll need to either get a compatible board or ask someone else to provide one that does.

I noticed the wording in my earlier message wasn’t quite clear. What I intended was to clarify that the bios update only mentions "Update to AMD ComboAm4v2PI 1.2.0.5," without explicitly stating support for certain chips. I thought the X3D would work on the 450 boards, but I might have misunderstood. Edited April 22, 2022 by jvdubz – incomplete information.

The update includes new features, and the most recent version is 1.2.0.6c. It's unclear if this will work with the standard B450 Tomahawk model.

I reviewed the article and realized it suggested using a motherboard with an AM4 socket and a matching chipset for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Motherboards for AMD chips are built using chipsets from AMD, each offering different features. The Ryzen 5000 series, including the 5800X3D, works with all 400 and 500-series consumer chipsets. Relevant options include X570, B550, A520, X470, and B450.

Even with Agesa’s addition, the system must recognize the specific chip model. It’s conceivable the board will start up but often displays “Unknown” instead of identifying the exact part during the POST. This happened when running a Newark mobile on a DFI NF3-250 LanParty board—it would boot, yet the board failed to name it properly.

All B450 boards use AM4 form factors, which is accurate. Still, if the chip isn’t listed by name in the BIOS, the board might not function correctly or may behave unpredictably during reboots.

Support for various chips within a BIOS can be inconsistent; some models are included while others aren’t, depending on the manufacturer or BIOS version. For instance, the Crosshair IV supports FX/AM3+ chips after a BIOS update, but not all FX variants by model. Originally designed for AM3 chips, it only covered certain FX chips at launch, not the entire 9xxx series.

You can attempt a newer BIOS to stay current, but results aren’t guaranteed. After fifteen years in this field, I’ve tested setups like this and learned that flexibility has decreased. Ultimately, we can’t change that—it’s simply how the industry operates.

MSI is likely to introduce support soon, though it hasn’t done so yet. There’s a chance they’ll add it within the next week, but nothing is certain. Support could arrive later today or it may take months.
