The license came from a PC company that didn't reply to my email, so I had to purchase one. Microsoft mentioned the BIOS update might have erased the key, but it could just be a misunderstanding. I think it was activated on Windows 11 Pro before the BIOS update, which caused the Windows reset and prevented activation afterward; the troubleshooter suggested this wasn't valid.

The link wasn't provided with a license; it was included pre-activated by the PC company.

I’d prefer not to discuss this openly at the moment. I’m waiting to see if I can obtain the refund or get a response via email. I also don’t know if they’ll pursue legal action if I speak up publicly. I’ll let you know in a message later.

I wouldn't anticipate a refund. Hope you have a good outcome.

Your system was set up correctly on an activated Windows machine, guiding you through the process. Create an MS account using an email address if you don’t have one yet, and the license will connect to that account automatically—no need to remember the key. Of course, you’ll still require another method to access your emails for confirmations, as the system restricts direct Windows access.

The license wasn't connected to my Microsoft account—it was on the motherboard. I didn’t have the key, no stickers, no paperwork. I was talking to Microsoft for an hour, gave them all my information, and they liked it. They told me I didn’t have the key and that when I disagreed, the BIOS would say it couldn’t help, and I had to buy one.

This is to be worked out between you and the company you bought the PC and its license from.

I think I'm just short by $211, and they haven't replied to my email yet.

licences stored on mainboard (in bios) come from direct OEMs such as asus, hp, lenovo and similar major brands that manufacture their own computers. a bios update wouldn’t reset these kinds of licences. however, a bios update might change the hardware id. your digital licence remains on ms activation servers. since you didn’t link it with a microsoft account, you can’t retrieve it. ultimately, it’s up to the OEM builder provider to supply you with a new key if this one was affected. next time, connect that key to the ms online account so you can manage your keys and devices there.
