CS hasn't expanded significantly over the last couple of years, which makes me question if they're abandoning it or forming opposing groups while it keeps growing.

The number of individuals holding substantial stockpiles is quite high; if there were just a few, it would be noticeable, though I question whether Valve would manage that many people.

They mentioned several months back that CSGO would release a source 2 update.

So what's the point? CS 1.6 ran from 1999 to 2011, and while the source split the community, most dedicated players stayed with it. With the current financial stakes and economy in play, it seems unlikely they’d just remove everything if they decide to make a new game in six years. That timeline feels tight since 1.6 began to decline around 2010-2011.

They likely will move the game to Source 2 while maintaining the existing CS game version.
