You just received a new Super Flower Leadex III Gold power supply and it’s producing a really loud noise. The audio matches what you heard here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/as7bv0092...4.MOV/file. It seems to stop when the fan slows down, which suggests coil whine rather than a major issue with your PSU. Since you recently replaced the first Leadex unit and it never made that sound, this might be an isolated problem. Your concern about the PSU sliding off the desk is valid—damage could have occurred if it wasn’t secured properly. The scratches on your desk are noticeable but not severe.
I don’t detect any coilwhine in the recording. I can sense something else—more of a humming that gradually fades. At first it felt like a fan, but once it disappeared, the fan became clearly audible. I’m not sure what it is, but it doesn’t sound like a coil.
Unlucky events caused the fan to lose its alignment. It tends to sit at the bottom, making it more likely to get damaged from impacts. I didn’t follow your advice since I don’t usually check those kinds of links.
In the optimal situation is the least favorable outcome, the coil
Verify the power supply unit. It might require a fan swap, and if it’s new I’d opt for a replacement right away. I didn’t pay attention to the file you shared, but I did own a PSU a few years back with a thin plastic cover that made a loud noise. I traced it back to the material that started vibrating internally... honestly, I’m not sure if manufacturers are suing over that kind of plastic anymore. I’d still take a closer look—any label indicating airflow could cause vibration.
You're wondering if the issue might be coming from the power supply unit itself. At first, you thought it could be the fan or a loose clip, but now you're still hearing a buzz even when the fan is off. The sound seems more noticeable than expected, which makes you think it might be related to the PSU. You're concerned about potential damage, like fire or breakdown, and want to confirm whether it's just the fan or something more serious. It's understandable to feel worried, especially since the noise gets louder when things heat up.
It's possible the power supply could fail completely, causing all connected components to be damaged. Alternatively, it might overheat and ignite, leading to widespread destruction.
I don't think there's anything like the plastic shroud in here since my first Super Flower Leadex did not have this issue. I removed the PSU and moved all the case cables out of the way of the PSU; this problem is still exactly the same though. Based on this sound alone, is it possible that the PSU could just break and destroy all of my other parts? Or that it could start smoking and also destroy all my other parts? I was gonna return this, but the item is unfortunately out of stock on Newegg. I have until March 20th to see if it comes back in stock. I just found out that this PSU apparently only has a 3-month warranty which is definitely the lowest I've seen for any part. I heard you can contact Super Flower then and get a longer warranty, so I'll have to try that out; still, I'd rather return it to Newegg so I can get a brand new PSU instead of the refurbished one I'd get from Super Flower.
