Hello Everyone, I'm facing an unusual problem. During stress tests, my 120mm fan (4pin) causes my PC to shut down. The room temperature is about 75 degrees. With a stock Intel cooler, the old noisy one spins up to 4,400 RPM, which is the highest I've seen it reach. It doesn't shut down even though the temperature stays similar. Around idle, it's around 43°C. I'm using an Xeon X3440 overclocked to 3.8 GHz, with 1.3 vcore and 1.22 vtt on an ASUS H7P55-M motherboard. I suspect it's not power-related because the OC remains stable with the stock fan. It even allows me to reach 4GHz at higher voltages without issues. I think a security feature in the processor or motherboard might be preventing it from spinning when RPM is low on the 120mm, but the CPU temperature stays good at the current clock speed. The fan appears to fail when it doesn't get enough RPM. I tried disabling all HW monitors in the BIOS, but that didn't help. Thanks for any advice!

Reset the CMOS and test the fan connection. Consider using a different header if needed.

I'm curious if the issue lies with the CPU rather than your VRMs. The Intel stock cooler pushes significantly more air around the CPU socket compared to a tower cooler. If your VRMs are overheating, that could explain it.

I hope that's correct. The intel fan is now oriented sideways, similar to an aftermarket cooler fan. After removing it from the stock heatsink, I placed it in a better one with six heat pipes. I also tried directing fans toward the VRMs directly, but it had no effect.

The motherboard's age shouldn't be dismissed, as issues could stem from mounting stress. Excessive heat combined with thermal expansion may lead to pin misalignment in the socket, triggering shutdowns. Past experiences with water blocks show that contact during use can cause lockups.

I've already reset the CMOS, but the problem remains. I followed the instructions to set the BIOS time and date. Interestingly, using the old Intel cooler inside the case didn't help since it wasn't accessible, so I connected the real CPU cooler to the fan header. The system didn't shut down.

I believe there is a BIOS setting for reporting CPU fan RPM. It mentions am alarm but I haven't any idea what this alarm is but I doubt it shuts down the PC. What it sounds like now is it has something to do with reporting CPU fan. I wonder if you tell the BIOS to ignore the fan RPM, or if the fan fails if that will solve the problem.

I have the latest BIOS version for this motherboard and loosened the CPU mount because it was slightly bent. Now the CPU is straight and the heatsink maintains good contact. Temperatures remain stable, but the shutdown issue remains unexplained.

Testing the setup once more by attaching the stock cooler fan outside the chassis could produce consistent outcomes. If successful, consider removing the CPU header connection to evaluate performance with different headers or a direct PSU connection.
