I acquired my 5950x roughly eight months ago, and I used Asus's AI Suite 3 to automatically increase the CPU speed ("5-way Optimization"). To begin, I should mention that I'm not very experienced with CPU overclocking; my only previous attempts were on GPUs, and this was my first time working with CPU overclocking. I opted to let the software handle it for me. The performance improved noticeably, but everything remained stable until recently. About a few weeks ago, my PC started freezing unexpectedly. It would either freeze completely or the screen would go black while the fans sped up to maximum. I had to shut it down completely—either via power button or power supply switch—to prevent damage. Initially, the issue occurred occasionally, but now it happens daily. I’m worried about causing harm by shutting it down so often and want a solution. My first guess was related to the CPU overclock (since I’ve done GPU OC before). However, everything seemed fine for the past six months of continuous use. I’ve read conflicting advice online—some suggested high voltage, others said no software changes—and it felt overwhelming. I lowered the core clock from 100.0x45.50 to 100.0x45.00 and raised the CPU voltage from 1.250V to 1.275V (as recommended). It worked without major issues, but the next day it froze again. Then I switched the voltage clock to automatic, and now the CPU runs at 1.419V. This is unusual because I’ve heard anything above 1.4V can damage CPUs. When I ran Cinebench at that voltage, temperatures jumped to 110°C instantly—something completely unexpected since my cooler usually stays under 85-88°C. With previous settings, temperatures never exceeded that range, even during idle. Clearly, something is amiss. Do you have any advice on properly overclocking this model? Or have you encountered similar freezing problems before? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Some aspects stand out here: Ryzen doesn't handle voltages above around 1.3-1.35V on the VCore effectively—it quickly becomes too hot. Overclocking it won't help much, as you lose single-core speed and only gain a few hundred to a couple of thousand MHz. PBO is a better option, reaching about 98% of that limit. Prioritize memory overclocking instead. Avoid automatic OC tools—they often cause problems (see your experience). If you're not confident overclocking yourself, skip it entirely.

And with 4000 cl16 prob die, you still have solid rams (though the setup is pretty rough). Push the frequency as high as possible within the clock limits—some voltages can help stabilize the clock. Reduce the clock speeds, target at least cl14, but aim lower if you can. Keep the voltage around 1.5v if you’re not overloading the rams, up to 1.7v if you need extra cooling. For fans over the rams, go up to 2.05v or more—but be aware that voltage stays around 1.6v due to certain kits. If you’re under 60°C consistently, it works well; otherwise, stick to 2v plus static voltage. Curve optimizer can help you lower the voltage for better cooling without hurting performance.

It’s likely your CPU has simply worn out. Those automatic programs are usually rushed, just crank the voltage high and call it a win.

I'm not very experienced with RAM overclocking, but I just turned on DOCP and pushed it to its highest setting (3733 MHz). Would doing everything you mentioned improve reaching 4000 MHz? I thought a 2x16 configuration would be better than a 4x8, but I also liked the look of filling all four slots.

The voltage was adjusted to 1.250 V, which is actually lower than the standard setting.

Watch some buildzoid 32gb b die ocing videos—they cover most of what you need. Don’t be too strict with the voltage since that can mess up the display, especially on the die side where voltage matters a lot. Start around 1.7V but aim for about 1.6V if you want extra safety.

Watch some buildzoid 32gb b die ocing videos—they cover most of what you need. Don’t be too strict with the voltage since that can mess up the display, especially on the die side where voltage matters a lot. Start around 1.7V but aim for about 1.6V if you want extra safety.

During idle mode, Ryzen processors operate at 1.4-1.5V, whereas under heavy usage they drop closer to 1.2V.
