Unlucky? 3DMark CPU test for 13900HX showing top 15% on Clevo laptop Sager.
Am I facing a tough situation? I purchased my laptop from XoticPC, which is mainly known for its Clevo models, often called Sager online. The specifications are listed here: https://clevo-computer.com/en/laptops-co...a-rtx-4070. I have a 13900HX 4070 (mobile) with 64 GB RAM at 4800 MHz. By chance, I downloaded 3DMark and ran the GPU test—my results are impressive, sitting in the top 45%. That’s a solid performance for what I got. However, my CPU scores are terrible, hovering around the bottom 7% of the average. The overall average was about 12,000, but my score was 7,000. After updating Windows and the NVIDIA drivers, my scores improved noticeably to 10,000, though still in the lower 15%. It seems like I might have missed out on something, or maybe the hardware isn’t up to the mark. I looked into the BIOS settings but couldn’t find any XMP options—it looks oddly designed. The latest version from Clevo’s site was installed, so it should be current. What could be going wrong? Is there anything I can do differently?
It's running at 13900hx, which means it's pushing limits unless your machine has powerful cooling. Your setup handles it, but it feels like a lightweight model compared to that spec.
the laptop's size and design affecting airflow, improper CPU installation, or inadequate cooling solutions. Your experiment with the frozen blueberries is a clever attempt to test thermal performance. Given your investment and the importance of this project, it’s worth investigating further to ensure optimal operation.
laptops lack the space for thermal mass found in desktops, leading to overheating because their coolers are compact. You usually don’t expect a laptop to perform like a desktop while staying small and portable. Laptops don’t bend reality or physics; if the cooler has insufficient heat capacity, the CPU can enter thermal runaway until power is reduced or you use it for tasks better suited to a desktop.
Have you cleared out any unnecessary software that came with your setup? Did you adjust your system by turning off all startup programs except Windows Defender? Is your laptop set for performance or power saving mode? Was it plugged into the power source during testing or on battery? Have you disabled all background applications? A simple solution is to open Windows settings and enable Game Mode, which will stop any non-essential processes from running. None of these options make it a full desktop, but they can boost your overall performance.
I really value this help! Do you have any bloatware already installed with your setup? I’ve removed it myself for around $15 using XoticPC. I’ve checked and haven’t experienced a system with such a minimal installation before. Have you also adjusted your settings by turning off all startup programs except Windows Defender? I haven’t disabled everything completely. I’m uncertain which components are necessary, but here’s what I currently have active—let me know if any should be removed! I’d really like to reduce the time it takes for startup. -FnKey Application (from Clevo, not sure what it does) -DisplayLinkTrayApp.exe -RtkAudUService64.exe -SecurityHealthSystray.exe Is your laptop running in performance mode or power-saving mode? It’s set to performance, which is good, but it’s wise to verify. Have you connected the device to a power source during testing, or was it on battery? It was plugged in. Did you disable all unnecessary background applications? Only 3DMark remained open. A quick solution would be to open Windows Settings and enable Game Mode, which will stop any non-essential background processes. I hadn’t tried that yet; I’ll do it and see if it helps! None of the suggestions turned my system into a full desktop, but they can boost overall performance. Of course, thanks for your support!
Returns and further adjustments only make things worse. This laptop seems to overheat easily. I’ll run more tests tonight to cool it down and check if the problem resolves.
