Hello everyone, I'm trying to assist my friend with a problem they're facing while using their gaming hardware. They have the ROG Strix Z390-F with the Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti, Intel Core i7 8700k, and other components listed. The issue occurs in most games, where after a short time (sometimes even during launch), both screens go black, the CPU fan speeds up to maximum, and audio stops. After a few seconds, audio returns but the monitor doesn't respond. They can only restart the system to fix it. Stress testing the GPU with OCCT shows an immediate crash at the start of the test. Reinstalling drivers via DDU helped temporarily, restoring system stability for a while before everything reset again. Updating DirectX and related software didn't resolve the problem. Any other suggestions or potential causes would be appreciated. We're stuck here. Edited November 18, 2022 by Neko Yumi updated PSU spec
Have you considered reducing the GPU clock speed to check if that fixes the issue? If successful, it might indicate a failing GPU. Are there any components you can replace to help identify the problem? Which specific PSU model is your system using?

Cooler Master GX Bronze 750W 80 Bronze PLUS post has been revised accordingly. He hasn't attempted underclocking; would you have any guidance on how to do it easily for testing? He might consider swapping GPUs if available, and I'll keep the post updated if that happens. Thanks for your help!
MSI Afterburner is likely the most recognized and user-friendly tool for tweaking clocks and settings on a GPU, with just a few sliders for core clock, power limits, memory clocks, etc. If you have another system, consider running the same stress test on the 1070ti—it might provide useful insights.
Wow, I didn't realize I missed MSI Afterburner—I actually used it myself. Since we're online friends, I'm just passing along his issue to help him out. He's not familiar with any systems or parts and is trying to see if adjusting the sliders will pass the stress test. It might be a questionable PSU, and I didn’t dig into its details beforehand. However, it claims strong power output on the 12V rail for the 1070ti. Still, it doesn’t seem like an especially solid choice based on what I see.
The hardware is quite outdated and may be prone to instability, which is understandable. After reviewing the underclock test results, I’m beginning to seriously doubt the motherboard’s condition, though DDU does help clarify some of the issues. This uncertainty was mainly caused by the problem description.
It seems the device is overheating quickly. Have you verified the temperatures? A 1080 Ti might be past its clean+repaint phase.
It still failed after being underclocked. The power cap wasn’t reduced simultaneously—did you adjust it separately? Starting with the power limit at 100 and lowering the core clock by a few hundred MHz would be my first step. Also, make sure to monitor temperatures closely.
The card barely has anytime to heat up that it immediately crashes so it cannot be overheating. This is very true though ( btw 1070Ti not 1080Ti. ) He kept the power limit at 100 ( under the fans section ) and put both the memory & core clock at the lowest value MSI afterburner slider let him do. And it still crashed during the same stress test using OCCT. BTW launching fortnite now immediately causes the system to undergo the same issue.
