These are distinct games. I never received D2 via Steam, only through alternative means, but I don’t recall any issues with launching it. You might need to set up GFWL and use a local account because the service is no longer active. It’s tough to remember—earlier this year when I upgraded my PC I accidentally deleted the save file and didn’t want to restart, so I removed it. In the worst scenario, you’d have to obtain it from another source. They likely purchased it before it was taken down a long time ago.
It's surprising there isn't an alternative to Games for Windows Live. I haven't been able to locate any substitute yet.
