Hello everyone! I'm trying to push my machine's performance by overclocking and facing some RAM stability problems at lower clock speeds. I have a Ryzen 1700 with an OC of 3.9, using 3600 MHz DDR3 RAM. After looking into compatibility issues, I found others using 3466 MHz and decided to go with the lower setting for safety. I entered all the specs into my BIOS and ran Intel Burn Test—successful on standard runs, but freezing after 15-20 minutes at max speed. The CPU itself is stable when overclocked, so it's probably the RAM that's having trouble. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Existing SOC at 1.1 and DRAM at 1.42 – not sure if pushing further would improve safety or boost performance.
I’m not aware of anyone else relying on IBT for RAM testing. Many people prefer tools like TM5 or memtest64 instead. If IBT seems stuck, it might point to an issue beyond your RAM configuration.
To the best of my knowledge, IBT relies heavily on RAM, particularly during more demanding tests. I'm open to correction if I'm mistaken. My CPU overclock appears fine—it has passed all IBT assessments on its own, as well as extended sessions in Prime and OCCT (just to be cautious). It only fails once when adjusting the RAM settings. I plan to test one of those software tools to check for issues.
3600mhz places a heavy demand on first-generation Ryzen processors. Even at lower speeds like 3200mhz, achieving stable performance was challenging—only reaching about 3.8ghz on a 1700x stable board. At 3600mhz or even 3466, it seems the limits are being pushed further. The Ryzen 2 handles these frequencies better but still faces limitations; I often had to lower the clock to 2800mhz to hit around 4.2ghz across all cores on a 2700x. Consider upgrading to a higher socket if you can, but be mindful of stability at 1.2v. Keep RAM voltage at its rated level. If you must downclock, adjust timings and focus on reducing latency for your chosen speed—it does require some effort. A range from 2800mhz to 3200mhz seems reasonable depending on CPU quality, target clock, and workload. For gaming at 2800mhz, Ryzen performs better due to improved memory bandwidth and InfinityFabric speed. However, beyond a certain point, the gains in clock speed may not outweigh thermal or stability concerns. Stress tests like IBT are acceptable, but running OCCT large FFT or ASUS RealBench can give more accurate insights. These tools offer real-world results; you can load all RAM with 7zip to evaluate your system’s limits, and they cover memory and core performance at high frequencies. Smaller benchmarks mainly serve extreme thermal validation.
The SOC voltage is likely too low. For stable performance of your 4x8 3200mhz Flare X kit on Crosshair VI Hero (off Wi-Fi), set it to 1.175v with high LLC. You can safely run it up to 1.2v continuously.
3466 is quite fortunate for a first-gen Ryzen, just reduce the clock speeds.
