there were certain conditions that made this game frustrating to play in FPS mode, even on my 970. It was more than a year ago and I wasn't sure what caused it (perhaps physics?). I tried playing with VSync and maximum detail, and it consistently ran at 60fps when synced.

It sets the highest possible frames per second based on your screen's refresh limit

It secures the lock by aligning it with the screen's refresh frequency, or a reduced version of it.

Improve the adaptive V-sync method or avoid using it altogether. It works well at steady 60fps, but performance drops when it falls below that rate. It introduces a tiny input delay but adds some lag overall.

It tends to tie your frame rate to your refresh rate, just like in a heavily modified Minecraft world (with 225 mods). When vysnc is enabled, performance drops noticeably—often falling between 20-30 FPS. In demanding games, this can affect stability, and I haven’t seen any screen tearing on my 60 Hz display at 120 fps.

Your monitor runs at 60Hz, but VSync isn’t working because it’s not syncing with that rate. The GPU might be trying to match the frame rate, which can cause lower FPS instead of smooth 60fps.

Occasionally the graphics card struggles to match the game's demands, causing frame drops.

Black Flag stands out as a special case. The game operates perfectly only when AA is disabled. Most graphics cards struggle to handle the numerous objects displayed. Disabling AA should give you a similar experience.

V-sync stops you from exceeding your monitor's refresh speed. If you're not hitting over 60 frames per second, disable it since it doesn't help and just creates issues.
