This guide is a solid beginning point. I understand trying things by trial and error, choosing a campaign first, and giving it a shot. My approach when I first played Total War has stuck with me, even though it isn’t the top choice—just quite satisfactory.

Lastly, someone who plays! If you're running a campaign, agree with Mr. bbrooking18. For those aiming for multiplayer, there are many excellent YouTube channels. Here are a few I like; Heir of Carthage, Attila the Great Total War Zone, THFE Productions, and Zaript. Their tournament content stands out from casual play, which aligns more with my preferred style (Heir of Carthage). They also cover campaign playthroughs. There are many more out there—hope this helps and have fun!

He loves to stay strategic, focusing most on PVP in his videos while still learning about rock-paper-scissors dynamics. His Rome 2 history clips are truly impressive. Always position your cavalry at an angle and avoid straight-on attacks. Use troop abilities wisely—they often cost exhaustion. Darren in Total War does plenty of mod reviews to help you get started. Surreal Beliefs integrates a lot of historical detail into their gameplay, especially during the Rome campaigns.

I really appreciate the historical aspect of THFE. Prince of Macedon often handled such tasks. Those channels look promising; I'll take a closer look.

If you're passionate about history, explore Lindy Beige. He's a British archaeologist who has studied many ancient weapons featured in total war games. He brings a dry, unexpected British wit to his work, much like Monty Python.

I've gone through the prologue. Capua is defeated. It's hard to keep everyone coordinated, and sometimes I tell them to cross the river, but a few go in the opposite direction. What's happening?

pathing river crossings and bridges act as a bottleneck, probably allowing only single-player access. You can bundle units and assign them to your number buttons. You can also lock formations you create. For beginners, I suggest grouping unit clusters then selecting formations from the dropdown menu. I can't explain the exact button functions since I've remapped my keybinds—this guide might help.
