Mhmm, I'm curious about securing the fan with a zip tie. Will that help keep things cool? The VRMs are rated for 4V and can handle over 100 amps, but temperature control is key. Make sure it stays within safe limits.

R7 4GHz draws power from 100 to 130 amps based on load and voltage, staying close to the weak VRM limits. A high-speed 80mm fan can provide some assistance.

Keep the VRMs cool by using aftermarket heatsinks—larger ones perform better—and add a small fan for extra protection.

I've been using the 1700x for nearly nine months with the Asus PRIME B350-PLUS, and it has performed well right out of the box. The main issue I've faced recently is the new BIOS released in 3401 to support newer CPUs. I'm having trouble getting power back on after a full shutdown. If you choose this board with BIOS 1002 until another update is available after 3402, I'd recommend it. I'm also running some older hardware that uses PCI, which still works fine. That card is a great sound card, and its built-in components are far better than the standalone ones you'll find elsewhere.

I've been using the Biostar X370GT3 for quite some time now. If you're worried about the VRM heatsink, consider installing a custom chip heatsink like these ones. They cost just a dollar each.

This motherboard includes an older PCI expansion port; according to ASUS, it is compatible with Ryzen processors.

For $270 USD you can obtain a Sound Blaster AE7, offering essentially all the capabilities of the X-Fi plus additional features. Initially I thought software compatibility would be nonexistent for such an outdated chip, but it seems Creative actually provides Windows 10 support for X-Fi cards. Note: OS-based software may exist, though peripheral support could vary. Modern applications tend to work better with AE series cards rather than X-Fi ones. Edited January 23, 2020 by Mira Yurizaki
