AM4 board with old PCI setup has been an issue for upgrading to AMD Ryzen over time. I’ve used the E-MU 1616m soundcard for a long while—it offers top-tier pro audio at a reasonable price. The main challenge is that new AMD boards don’t support legacy PCI slots.

I’d like to clarify why switching to standard soundcards makes sense. It’s similar to how graphic designers work—there are tools, but audio producers have more specialized software. You can control your soundcard via features like the Control Panel, native ASIO drivers, MIDI connections, various sample rates, and even DSP for mixing. The PatchMix panel is powerful and zero-latency, making it ideal for mixing and setup.

Most common soundcards are geared toward gamers, not audio professionals. I don’t require surround sound or complex surround setups. My focus is on music production—using tools like CtrlPanel, WDM, and hardware connections to achieve high-quality mixes.

The main reason to keep the hardware is for advanced mixing capabilities. If you’re just a gamer, you probably don’t need it. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t say “you don’t need a soundcard interface.” Maybe ask a graphic designer instead? After all, there are plenty of videos and discussions about whether a soundcard is still necessary in 2020.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply! I discovered some modern motherboards like the GIGABYTE C246-WU4, possibly for my own build – a workstation setup. It’s not compatible with Ryzen, but it supports Intel chips (Xeon 6/12 socket). Oh no, the Gigabyte Z370 HD3P also looks interesting at a better price! Regarding drivers, I agree – Win 7 and Vista drivers for E-MU soundcards function in Windows 10 too. I have an Audiotrak soundcard with a low profile, and it works fine. Drivers are okay. I’m still using Windows 7, though support has ended. Thanks again for the helpful comments!

Keep in mind, just yesterday the C246-WU4 was delisted from our inventory, so it’s likely to disappear from other markets too. On the positive side, I found an AM4 board with Zen 2 support that’s sold across Central Europe for around 100 euros (about a decent price). The ASUS PRIME X370-A is a typical X370 model—standard VRMs, not much to offer—but it’s the only one with PCI available right now. It should theoretically work with the whole Ryzen 3000 series, though an R5 3600 might still be an issue.
