Sourceforge created tailored installers for well-known projects and included marketing tools or toolbars alongside the installer. This explains the "other download options" section on FileZilla’s site, offering a direct link to an official, non-abused version without Sourceforge promotions. Still, addressing the topic—yes, Microsoft antivirus works. I’ve used Avira; it’s not top-tier, but it meets my needs. It’s free, though it occasionally displays ads or upgrade prompts each day, which can be ignored easily.

I'm not sure about this. It might be possible, but for me it wasn't a bundled installer with adware. I had one app—perhaps even FileZilla—which had adware during installation, asking if you wanted to install another program. If you just pressed the quick buttons without hesitation, you might have ended up with McAfee and something else.

Possibly, though it seems clean now Defender plus Malwarebytes (free trial)

I rely on MS Defender and consult VirusTotal for additional insights when required.
