Microsoft Defender ranks among the top antivirus solutions based on av-test.org. It also lacks unnecessary features.

Microsoft Defender functions properly. I've used Sophos Home for many years. Just register using an email address. https://home.sophos.com/en-us

If you need another perspective, I’d suggest AVG, which is part of Avast. It performs well and offers strong protection. I’ve used it for years without a subscription and it saved me several times.

It's all Norton Lifeguard. They control Norton, Avira (and therefore Bullguard) and Avast (which also includes AVG). The only drawback is McAfee. Twenty years ago I preferred Trend Micro, and about a decade later Eset Nod32 was top-notch. In recent years Kaspersky and Bitdefender dominate the market. Add F-Secure and possibly Bullguard. Those four might be the best options besides Defender.

Windows Defender stands out as a solid option without needing an antivirus subscription. Its main drawback is its tendency to reject whitelisted false alarms, which can happen more often with very outdated software.

They seem to be in the process of merging. AVG continues to perform well and has consistently earned praise for its security and protective features. When compared to McAfee, it's like comparing MKHD to The Verge.

Windows defender marks the FileZilla installer as safe despite coming from a trusted source, not a random file dump. I had McAfee already installed on my Dell G5, let the 30-day free trial end, and then used Windows defender afterward after removing McAfee.

The installer didn’t include any hidden ads, likely just a leftover from an earlier version.
